A 9-Day Adventure Through Spiti Valley

A complete Himachal circuit from Shimla to Manali through the heart of Spiti — the green valleys of Kinnaur, the cold desert villages of the upper Himalaya, the 500-year-old mummy monk at Gue Monastery, and two nights under the star-flooded skies of Chandratal, before crossing the Atal Tunnel back into green Kullu Valley.

Day-wise Itinerary

  1. 1

    Shimla to Sangla

    Via Narkanda – Rampur – Karcham, approx. 220–230 km, 8–10 hours. You gain roughly 5,250 ft (1,600 m) of altitude on this leg. Road is mostly good till Rampur, narrower and rougher after Karcham. Start early, carry warm clothes, medicines, snacks and cash — fuel and network get limited once you enter remote Kinnaur.

    Sangla to Kalpa, via Chitkul

    Chitkul – Indo-Tibet border viewpoint – Rakcham – Sangla – Karcham – Reckong Peo – Kalpa, approx. 65–80 km, 4–6 hours including sightseeing stops. Cold winds and sudden temperature drops are common near Chitkul and the border region — carry warm layered clothing.

    Kalpa to Nako & Gue

    Kalpa → Pooh → Khab → Sumdo → Gue → Nako, approx. 120–135 km, 5–7 hours. The drive shifts from green Kinnaur valleys to the cold desert of Spiti, passing cliffs, tunnels and the fast-flowing Sutlej River. Gue Monastery's 500-year-old mummy monk is a highlight stop before continuing to Nako, a high-altitude village known for its serene lake and monasteries.

    Nako to Tabo, via Pin Valley

    Nako → Sumdo → Mud Village (optional Gue diversion) → Tabo → Dhankar → Attargo Bridge → Pin Valley, approx. 130–145 km to Mud Village, 5–7 hours. The route runs along the Spiti River with wide desert views, ending at Tabo, home to a centuries-old monastery, before continuing to serene Mud Village in Pin Valley.

    Pin Valley to Kaza

    Mud Village → Sagnam → Attargo Bridge → Kaza, approx. 50 km, 2–3 hours. A short but scenic drive along the Pin River through remote Himalayan villages. Kaza is Spiti's main hub for food, stays and local sights, and the base for the next day's circuit.

    Kaza Sightseeing Circuit

    Kaza → Key Monastery → Kibber → Chicham → Hikkim → Komic → Langza → Kaza, in a single smooth day. An early start makes the most of gentle weather and clear peak views across all five villages.

    Komic to Chandratal, via Kunzum Pass

    Komic → Hikkim → Langza → Kaza → Losar → Kunzum Pass → Chandratal Lake Camps, approx. 95–110 km, 5–7 hours. One of the most scenic drives in Spiti, crossing the famous Kunzum Pass before reaching Chandratal — the Moon Lake.

    Chandratal Stay

    A full day and night at Chandratal Lake camps, far from any city lights — crystal-clear views of the Milky Way and peaceful moonlit mountain landscapes make this one of the most memorable nights of the trip.

    Chandratal to Manali, via Atal Tunnel

    Chandratal → Batal → Chhatru → Gramphu → Atal Tunnel → Manali, approx. 125–140 km, 6–8 hours. An adventurous drive through rugged terrain and glacier streams, crossing the Atal Tunnel — the transition point from cold desert back to the lush green Kullu Valley. Overnight in Manali; trip ends.

Can Shipki La and Lepcha La be added to this trip?

Yes — these are newly opened border-tourism viewpoints in Kinnaur, available on request. Since they're sensitive border areas, valid ID proof is mandatory, Army/ITBP instructions must be followed, and photography is restricted in certain zones.
